OBJECT
•D2562. Pair of White Figures of Seated Lions
Delft, circa 1760
Each marked with a D and a rose in blue for Dirck van der Does, owner of De Roos (the Rose) factory form 1755 until 1770
Modeled affronté, each with a well-defined mane and curled up tail, seated on an oval base.
DIMENSIONS
Heights: 17.5 cm. (6.9 in.)
NOTE
The mold used for the heads of the lions appears to have been utilized for both standing and seated lion figurines. Notably, the heads of a pair of polychrome standing lions, both marked on the bottom in blue with a claw and the number 3—indicating production by De Porceleyne Klaauw (The Porcelain Claw) factory—bear a striking resemblance to the heads of the white lions presented here. These polychrome lions are described and illustrated in Aronson 2003, p. 36. A similar resemblance is evident in a pair of unmarked polychrome groups depicting boys riding lions, which are described and illustrated in Aronson, 2017, pp. 112–115. This striking similarity suggests a potential collaboration between De Porceleyne
Klaauw and De Roos (The Rose) factories, highlighting the interconnected nature of Delftware production during this period.
