D2157. Two Blue and White Circular Salt Cellars

Delft, circa 1690

One marked and numbered 22 AK 3, the other 0 AK 3 in blue for Adrianus Kocx, the owner of De Grieksche A (The Greek A) factory from 1686 to 1701

The well of one painted with a seated and standing figure in a landscape of shrubbery within a roundel, the other painted with a bird in flight above another bird perched on a branch in a twelve-angled roundel, both surrounded by three teardrop-shaped panels of flowers alternating with three panels of pseudo-Chinese characters, all on a fretwork ground and encircled by a border of petals on the scalloped rim, the capstan- shaped body below painted on one with a wide band reserved with three medallions with leaf motifs above a continuous scene depicting two figures seated and one standing amidst a landscape of shrubbery and rocks, and the other painted with a wide flowering vine band underneath a border of petals, and above a continuous scene of rock work and flowering branches rising from the scalloped and barbed foot rim, and the underside with three integral peg feet.

Provenance: The Gaston de Ramaix Collection, Château de Grune, Belgium; hence by descent, and bearing the original collector’s label with numbers 316 and 317
