Figural cisterns of various male and female models, probably intended for beer, gin or wine, are referred to in Dutch as \u2018Bobbejakken\u2019, whereas their French derivatives are called \u2018pots-Jacquot\u2019 or \u2018pots-Jacqueline\u2019, and the English variations are called \u02bbToby jugs\u02bc (a name possibly derived from the jovially intoxicated Sir Toby Belch in William Shakespeare\u02bcs play, Twelfth Night, but more likely from the notorious eighteenth-century Yorkshire toper, Henry Elwes, who was known as \u02bbToby Fillpot\u02bc (or Philpot), and who inspired a popular English drinking song, \u02bbThe Brown Jug\u02bc, as well as a print published in 1761 by Carver and Bowles, London, which paid tribute to the then-infamous \u201cToby Fillpot\u02ee). Some of the Dutch Delft examples may be based on eighteenth- or nineteenth-century penny prints of the type depicting \u2018Trijn en Hans Altijddorst\u02bc (\u02bbTrijn and Hans Always-thirsty\u02bc), published by J. B. Ulrich, Rotterdam, circa 1820-50, and illustrated ibid., p. 102, no. 67, fig. 1.<\/p>\n
