TEFAF, organizers of ‘the art event of the year’, TEFAF Maastricht, came to the U.S. for the first time in October 2016. While TEFAF Maastricht takes place in the south of the Netherlands every March, TEFAF New York takes place in May and in October. The May event focussed on the 19th and 20th century, while the October event focusses on classical antiques. Aronson’s took part in the inaugural event with great enthusiasm and success and returned in October 2017 with a broad Delftware collection.
New York was a logical choice to expand the TEFAF brand. The city is often regarded as ‘the capital of the world’ and it is surely the global center for art. Since the late 19th century great art collectors built their collections, which in many cases now form the basis for the great art museums which are housed in the city.
John Taylor Johnston, a railroad executive, used his personal art collection to kickstart the Metropolitan Museum of Art and it became incorporated in 1870. The Frick Collection houses the collection of industrialist Henry Clay Frick, but even in more recent times art dealer Serge Sabarsky, and entrepreneur, philanthropist, and art collector Ronald S. Lauder, two friends, established the Neue Gallery in 2001.
But there are so many wonderful art museums around the US. According to TimeOut, some of the top museums in America are the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) or the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, the Getty Center in Los Angeles and some museums with amongst other things, great Delftware collections like the Philadelphia Museum of Art or the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum in Hartford, CT.
Aronson’s have been participating in the Winter Antiques Show in New York since January 1995 and we look forward to returning to New York the upcoming years.
